1 disk set

mac user with the older mac software are able to drop the ppp and the configppp on the system folder for them to go in the right place.

AOL conflicts

AOL conflicting with PPP- disabled AOL in the MacTCP menu.  After a reboot, AOL decided that IT REALLY WANTED to be  the default method for TCP connections. Went to the extensions folder and REMOVED the "AOL link"  Rebooted.  AOL is now apparently off her system, and PPP is trying to dial E-Znet for TCP-IP connections.

Freezing doing config ppp

Freezing the authentication window of configppp: delete the ppp refferences from the prefference folder, inside the system folder.

Locked configurations

Trying to set up Netscape Communiucator (iMac) to use her E-Znet email. They couldn't edit the information because:  The checkbox for "Use Internet Config" was checked.  This locks all the settings boxes and tells the application to look to a specific config fie which may or may not be set up. This is common to MANY intenet applicaitons that run on a Mac.

Navigation: user could not navigate.

  1. In TCP/ip on the mac setup you can click on the edit menu and select configuration. There you might find 2 configurations, one as the active configuration, one for default. Deselected  the selected configuration. Set up with our configuratiom as default configuration, and make that the active one.
  2. Trash MacTCPdnr

Network Selector

"apple extras" on hard disk, which is used as network software selector, allows you to choose between classic or open transport

Newsgroups:

  1. For a Microsoft Mail for MAC specific newsgroup, check out
    news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internet.mail.mac

Open button not available on configPPP:

  1. Open macTCP and click on LcalTalk, then back on PPP
  2. Aol will not let go of the PPP in MacTCP- remove TCP Pack for AOL from her Extensions folder, then togle the local/apple talk to ppp and try again.

OutlookExpress errors on mac.

After hearing of yet another Outlook express on a recent mac, OS~8.5, having trouble sending mail, I researched it as it has to be with OE. since another mail program will work, I found that the mail message : "could not send mail at this time" is caused by the setting SSL being checked. they are not to use secure socket layer.

PPP missing in system 7.52 or greater

"apple extras" right on hard disk is a network software selector, select between classic or open transport. Select classic to use the older version when the open transport ppp is missing.

Terminal Window

to dial earlier mac with terminal window, open terminal window  and type ATDT 262-2600 then enter.

upgrades to OS 8.5:

Michael relayed: Dan Rosica had a Mac customer problem, the person's modem would not dial out after he upgraded to OS 8.5
Dan found out two important items.
1) Make sure that the printer is not trying to access the modem port. Apparantly, the modem and the printer can become "confused" as to which port they are supposed to use.
2) Make sure the modem will be able to work under OS 8.5 This person's modem required a patch to allow it to work under the newer OS.
