Mail Box missing
unlimited dialup access account users missing mail directories on shell need a tech request made to create it. It happens more then not on hornell pop.
Mail box management
If a customer is having problems with mail and the box is suspected, do the following:
- enter the box to make sure the inbox is valad.
- if the mail messages have been accessed but not downloaded, then the message in question probably is too big for the mail client/connection they are using, OR it is corrupt in some way .Messages have theN removed from the front of them when they have been accessed if it is left unread then most likely it is on the client side.
- Delete that message as per users request
- If no messages have been accessed, then there is another problem, most likely with the mail client settings.
- Send to http://webmail.eznet.net
Mail Boxes too large:
Some users have had their mailbox moved because it was too large. To be able to allow the users access to this box, you will have to do the following:
The procedure to allow a user access to their large mail folder.
- Make sure they are set to remove messages from server
- sudo into the user
- type "cat /var/spool/mail/u/s/username /var/spool/bigmail/username > ~/temp.mail"
where: u=the first character of the username s= second character of the username- type "mv ~/temp.mail /var/spool/mail/u/s/username"
- Verify the mail was transferred by going into their mailbox via pine (or whatever).
- type "rm /var/spool/bigmail/username"
This access will last one week, at which time the large mail folder will be moved back into bigmail. DO NOT try to cat a folder bigger than 25MB. This will cause the drive to run out of space. Any user whose folder is larger than 25Mb must speak to the engineering department. Open a ticket for Frank to email the user. There is a copy of these procedures in /Company/Support/Support Doc's
Mail quota
A list is posted near the white board with users who are over quota...because they are over the hard quota people will not be able to send mail to them. If and when they call explain to them that they have gone over their quota. It is imperative that you stress that they are only alloted 15mb with their accounts and that we will bill them for any space used over 15mb
The size of the email box is limited to 15Mb or whatever space is unused after uploading your website.

Outlook Express(OE)
Outlook express on a recent mac, OS~8.5, having trouble sending mail, the mail message :
"could not send mail at this time" is caused by the setting SSL being checked. they are not to use secure socket layer. You need to turn off the SSL setting in your mail account.
Outlook express dropping connection after checking mail
A user kept getting disconnected when opening outexpress. The problem is not that Outlook Express is currupt. It is that the checkbox on the send/recieve dialogue window for "hang up when finished checking mail" is checked. I have seen a lot of this lately, more so in the last month then in the past year.
To Fix: If they hit the send/recieve button in outlook express and immediately click the stop button on the dialogue box, you will find the check box to uncheck. They must be set to see a modem or 3rd party dialer to have the check box there.
Outlook Express multiple profiles
Cust gets an error while checking mail, then: gets her mail. This was OE on a Mac. She had 2 profiles set up. One worked, the other wasnt set up right and was giving the error.
Redundent servers
Rick and the other engineers have completed what they call "High Availability" on the mail servers. There are now two control servers, D1 and D2. D2 constantly polls D1 every 10 seconds. If D1 does not respond, D2 takes over 207.50.128.22 and adds it to its own IPs and routes connections between Mail1 and Mail2. When a connection request comes in, it is assigned to each in a round-robin fashion. however, if one server should go down, it is immediately taken off the active list and all connections are sent to the remaining active server. This means, should a machine crash, or be taken down for maintenance, the customers should not see what is happening unless they were downloading email from the specific machine at the time of the crash.
Rick and the engineers performed tests on this after getting it running. When they dropped a server, it went red on the network map, but no users called in.---- jeff 11-8
RETURN RECIEPT
Turns out netscape have a return reciept options so that when you want a reciept of the mail you sent you use this and you get a response from the person who got the mail without them doing anything. Well our new mail server upgrade is not compatible with the netscape 4.02 or older version. The NEW NETSCAPE 4.5 has an options to use MDN and so it does work.
Return reciept option
in mail client not working. Mail recieved from
#1705 as a result of a support call, I wrote ticket 1707. Rick responded
that it was not on our end, however I tried it and since recieved another
call on it. The mail client netscape 4.5 will give the server error when
trying send return reciept mail out. the error is:
Your SMTP server does not support the return recieipt function
so your message will be sent without the return receipt request.
Time Stamp
Mail time stamps can appear wrong on peoples mail clients. Here is how it appears to go:
We put a time stamp on the mail in Greenwich Mean time based on the timezone their computer is setup with.
If the computer sending or recieving the mail is in eastern time and the
time on the mail will be correct, then the time stamp in a pop3 mail
client will be correct. If the computer is NOT in EST then it will display the wrong time on the mail. The timestamp ion the header, visible in the email properties, will
be in Greenwich mean time,
The time may be correct in tray. To correct this, double click on the
time change the time zone to ours.
Time out settings in Outlook Express and Outlook 98+
Increasing timeout times help,, but some clients do not have the ability to do this. It can be found on the advanced tab of Outlook express and Outlook 98 or greater.
- email can be viewed in a browser at http://webmail.eznet.net
- mailboxes can be managed by setting preferences in http://admin.eznet.net
- New mail boxes can be created at http://admin.eznet.net
- There is a security feature that will move your messages you delete to the trash folder. To delete message you should
1. check the box in front of the message to be deleted from the inbox.
2. Then click on the delete selected button at the bottom of the list
3. click on view folders on the left 4. click on the trash folder.
5. select all the messages in the trash folder.6. click on the purge button.
All the selected trashed messages will be deleted. This works very similarly to the current pop mail clients in that deleted messages will be stored on the trash or deleted folders till you empty them. The major difference is that they remain on our server till you delete them. 10-13-99- Customer with IE3.02 could not use web mail nor admin.eznet.net, getting a java script error.
- When logged into webmail, you should notice a new option in the menu called "account info". This feature will allow users to administrate their account directly without having to log into admin.eznet.net Even email only accounts will now be able to set their Full Name, Password, and any mail forwarding as if they had entered admin, but without the bother of trying to log into admin with their full account and then editing the email only account. --BlackBear
