--Reinstalling Connection Software--
General rules on replacing software to insure reliability:

There are 5 components that can become corrupt in windows which can easily be replaced without a windows reinstall. This section will go through, in detail, replacement of the first three: TCP/IP, DIALup Adaptor, and DUN. The 5 components are:
- Click Start/Settings/Control Panel
- Open up network.
- Highlight Each TCP/IP, on at a time and click remove.
- When all TCP/IP is gone, click ok on the bottom of the network window.
- Windows may copy some files at this time. If it wants windows software, see notes above.
- Windows will ask you if you want to reboot. Answer yes.
- When you come back up you will be in the control panel again.
- Open network.
- Click ADD.
- Select protocal from the list and click ADD.
- Select Microsoft from the list of manufacturers on the left, and TCP/IP from the list of protocals on the right and click OK.
- Click ok on the network window.
- Windows will copy files and ask you to reboot. click yes.
- Click Start/Settings/Control Panel
- Open up network.
- Highlight Dialup Adaptor, on at a time and click remove.
- When all Dialup Adaptor is gone, click ok on the bottom of the network window. Usually the deleting of Dialup adaptor also deletes TCP/IP and the client.
- Windows may copy some files at this time. If it wants windows software, see notes above.
- Windows will ask you if you want to reboot. Answer yes.
- When you come back up you will be in the control panel again.
- Open network.
- Click ADD.
- Select adaptor from the list and click ADD.
- Select Microsoft from the list of manufacturers on the left, and Dialup Adaptor from the list of Adaptors on the right and click OK.
- Click ADD.
- Select protocal from the list and click ADD.
- Select Microsoft from the list of manufacturers on the left, and TCP/IP from the list of protocals on the right and click OK.
- Click ok on the network window.
- Windows will copy files and ask you to reboot. click yes.
C. Replacing Dialup Networking
- Click Start/Settings/Control Panel
- Double click on the Add/Remove Icon
- Click once on the windows setup tab
- Double click Communications
- Uncheck DialUp networking, hyperterminal, phone dialer, direct cable connection
- Click OK on communications window, ok-ing any messages asking you if you are sure.
- Click APPLY on the windows setup window. Windows will think for a few seconds and come back to you.
- Double click Communications
- Check DialUp networking, and any other service you would like.
- Click OK on communications window, ok-ing any messages asking you if you are sure.
- Click APPLY on the windows setup window. Windows will think for an extended period, come back to you, faking out that it is done, then think some more. It probably will copy files and SHOULD ask you to reboot.
- Upon reoot, the client has been added so you will need to log in as a user. Using no password here will allow you to log in in the future to your computer with no password.
- Once windows is up, verify that TCP/IP has been reinstalled. If it has not been, Install it!
- Double click My Computer
- Double click Dialup networking. If it is not there, install it as in C above.
- Right click on your connectoid that you want to replace and select delete.
- Double click make new connection and run through a connection setup. clicking finish to create it.
- Right Click on the new icon you created and select Properties from the bottom of the list. Set up the phone number, modem properties, compression , TCP/IP protocal, dynamic ips, DNS ips etc.
- When through with configuring the new connetion, right click on the connection and select create a shortcut.
- Click yes to placing it on the desktop.
- Right click on the shortcut on the desk top and select delete.
- Double click on my computer
- Double click Dialup networking.
- right click on the connection and select create a shortcut.
- Click yes to placing it on the desktop.
F. Replacing Modem Software
- Click start/settings/control panel
- Double click modems
- Click on current modem to highlight it
- Click remove and confirm that you want to remove it.
- Reboot. On reboot the computer may autodect it. Run through autodetection, using the have disk options if need be.
- If it doesn't autodetect, use the software the modem came with.
- ****DO NOT DO THIS with the HP computer**** if it has a pci bridge, you must detect this first before the modem.
General rules on replacing software to insure reliability:
A. Replacement of MacTCPdnr Preferences
- Double click on the hard drive on your desk top.
- Double click on your system folder.
- Locate MacTCPdnr (or if in 8.5 or greater locate RemoteAccessDNR) and place it in your trash.
- Reboot and it will rebuild itself.
B. Removal of PPP preferences and reconfiguring.
- Double click on the hard drive on your desk top.
- Double click on your system folder.
- Double click on your preference folder.
- find PPP preferences or Remote access dialer preferences and place in trash
- Reboot, emptying the trash on reboot.
- Reset up your comfigPPP, PPP or remote access, depending on what you are using.
C. Removal of AOL preferences.
- Double click on the hard drive on your desk top.
- Double click on your system folder.
- Double click on your Extensions folder.
- Remove AOL extensions to trash
- Reboot, emptying upon reboot.
D. Removal of connection software.
Remove the following components from the appropriate folders, trash, and reboot. Then reinstall connection software.
